the Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department of Music, University of Chittagong, and Darul Irfan Research Institute Date: 10 August 2026 Venue: Office of the Chairperson, Department of Music, University of Chittagong On 10 August 2026, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Department of Music, University of Chittagong, and the Darul Irfan Research Institute (DIRI) in a formal academic setting at the office of the Chairperson of the Department of Music, University of Chittagong. The MoU was concluded with the objective of establishing an institutional framework for collaborative research on the collection, preservation, documentation, scholarly study, and musical notation of Maizbhandari Sufi songs. The initiative seeks to contribute to the systematic academic documentation and preservation of this important musical tradition and to facilitate further research into its historical, cultural, musical, and philosophical dimensions. The collaboration represents a significant step toward strengthening academic engagement in the field of traditional and devotional music. Through this project, the participating institutions intend to undertake systematic efforts to identify and collect Maizbhandari Sufi songs, preserve relevant archival materials, document oral and musical traditions, conduct scholarly research, and prepare standardized musical notations for future academic and cultural use. The signing ceremony was attended by Miskatul Momtaz, Chairperson of the Department of Music, along with faculty members Shomenjit Chakraborty, A.K.M. Koushik Ahmed, Monika Biswas, Farhana Rahman Kantha, and Anabil Ehsan. Representing the Darul Irfan Research Institute (DIRI) were its Managing Trustee and Chairman, Shajada Syed Irfanul Haque; Honorary Fellow, Professor Dr. Md. Sheikh Sadi; and Syedul Hoque Khan, Syed Erham Hossain, Syed Manawar Hossain, Mejbaul Alam Bhuyian, Mohiuddin Enayet, and Mohammad Sohel Chowdhury. The participants expressed their shared commitment to advancing the project through academic cooperation, methodological rigor, and collaborative research. Particular emphasis was placed on ensuring that the collection and preservation of Maizbhandari musical heritage are undertaken in a systematic and scholarly manner, while maintaining the authenticity and contextual integrity of the materials. The proposed collaboration is expected to create opportunities for interdisciplinary research, archival development, musicological analysis, preservation of intangible cultural heritage, and the production of scholarly resources for researchers, students, musicians, and the wider academic community. The signing of the MoU therefore marks an important milestone in institutional cooperation between the Department of Music, University of Chittagong, and the Darul Irfan Research Institute. It reflects a shared vision of preserving and studying Maizbhandari musical heritage through rigorous academic research and of contributing to the broader documentation and preservation of Bangladesh's rich intangible cultural heritage.

The Darul Irfan Research Institute (DIRI) has been consistently promoting scholarly research on Sufism through the Syed Delawar Hossain Maizbhandari Memorial Scholarship and the Syed Emdadul Hoque Maizbhandari Research (Mphil, PhD) Fellowship. As part of this continuing initiative, a scholarship award ceremony was held on 11 November 2025 at the T.A. Ganguly Hall of the Department of World Religions and Culture, University of Dhaka. Under the Syed Emdadul Hoque Maizbhandari Research (Mphil, PhD) Fellowship, scholarships were awarded to one M.Phil. researcher and two Ph.D. researchers. In addition, under the Syed Delawar Hossain Maizbhandari Memorial Scholarship, two Research Monograph Grants were awarded, while ten meritorious students received educational scholarships. The ceremony was graced by Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, Hon'ble Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education), University of Dhaka, as the Chief Guest.
